Lifting in running shoes is a common mistake: the soft foam squishes under the bar and your foot slides around on the sides. A gym shoe needs the opposite: a flat, firm, stable base. We rounded up adidas's eight training models, from the beginner-friendly Everyset to the Powerlift 5 weightlifting shoe, and tell you which one fits how you train. What a gym shoe needs

A flat, firm base: when you squat or deadlift, force should go into the floor, not get lost in soft foam.

Low drop: a small heel-to-toe difference (around 6 mm in the Dropset line) keeps your foot close to the ground and stable.

Lateral support: sidewall reinforcements (TPU on the Dropset 3 and Dropset Control) stop your foot from rolling off the sole during jumps and shuffles.

A grippy outsole: rubber that won't slip on gym floors or when pushing a sled.

Training shoe vs. weightlifting shoe

A training shoe like the Dropset is flat and handles almost everything: strength, jumps, jump rope and short runs.

A weightlifting shoe like the Powerlift 5 has a raised, rigid heel (about 15 mm effective, per RunRepeat) and a hook-and-loop strap. The heel helps you squat deeper with an upright torso, which is useful for front squats, cleans and snatches.

It's not for running or jump rope, and many people prefer a flat shoe for deadlifts. If you'll only own one pair, get a training shoe.

Which model for your training

HIIT and circuits: Rapidmove 2, light and built for agility, or Dropset 4 if your circuit includes weights.

Strength: Dropset 4 or Dropset 3. On a budget, Dropset Control. For Olympic lifting or deep squats, add a Powerlift 5.

Hyrox and hybrid training: Adizero Dropset Pro. Its Lightstrike Pro foam handles the running between stations better, though it's less stable under very heavy loads.

Boxing: Box Hog, with a multidirectional outsole for footwork. For bags and rope, not heavy lifting.

Verdict

For most people, the Dropset 4 (€104 on sale) is the best adidas gym shoe: stable for lifting and fine for jumps and short sprints. For wide feet or a lower budget, the Dropset 3 or Dropset Control. For Hyrox, the Adizero Dropset Pro. For Olympic lifting, add a Powerlift 5. And for boxing, the Box Hog.

Frequently asked questions

Can you lift weights in running shoes?

For cardio, yes. For strength, it's not ideal: soft foam compresses and reduces stability in squats and deadlifts. A flat, firm shoe is safer.

What's the difference between the Dropset 3 and Dropset 4?

Both have a 6 mm drop and a stable base. The Dropset 4 adds Repetitor tech and Geofit heel pods; the Dropset 3 has a wider fit and costs less.

Are weightlifting shoes worth it?

If you do deep squats, front squats or Olympic lifts, yes: the raised heel helps you stay upright. For general bodybuilding, a flat training shoe is enough.

What shoes are best for Hyrox?

Ones that balance running and stability. From adidas, the Adizero Dropset Pro, with Lightstrike Pro foam and a Continental outsole for running and sled pushes.
