Standard vs. multi-band GPS: when it matters

Standard GPS receives a single frequency from the satellites. On open roads or in a park it works well: pace and distance come out right.

Multi-band (dual-frequency) GPS receives two signals and filters out bounces off tall buildings, valleys or dense forest. If you run downtown or in the mountains, you'll see a cleaner track and a steadier instant pace.

It uses a bit more battery. That's why brands quote two numbers: GPS-only hours and all-systems multi-band hours.

AMOLED vs. MIP

AMOLED displays have vivid colors and look great indoors and at night. Most new watches use them.

MIP (memory-in-pixel) looks older, but it gets more readable the brighter the sun and uses very little power. The Forerunner 55 and Instinct 3 use it, which explains part of their battery life.

Which metrics and plans you actually need

To start, pace, distance, wrist heart rate and a guided plan are enough. Garmin watches include free Garmin Coach adaptive plans from 5K to half marathon and beyond.

From intermediate level, training status, load and Training Readiness help. The 265S, Instinct 3 and 970 have them. Any watch here handles intervals at exact pace; for a marathon, pick one with 25+ hours of GPS.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best running watch for beginners?

The Garmin Forerunner 55: it's simple, light and comes with free Garmin Coach plans. If you want an AMOLED display and payments, step up to the Forerunner 165.

Is multi-band GPS worth it?

Yes if you run among tall buildings, in forests or in the mountains: track and pace are steadier. On open roads, standard GPS is enough.

How much battery life do you need for a marathon?

20 hours is more than enough for a marathon. Extra battery is for ultras and charging less often: the Coros Pace 4 lasts 31-41 h and the Amazfit Active Max 64 h.

Coros vs. Garmin: which is better?

Coros gives you more battery and less weight for the money. Garmin has more health features, contactless payments and an app with more plans. For the average runner, the Coros Pace 4 is more watch for the price.
