What to look for

With casual sneakers, fit, material and sole matter more than technology. Suede is comfortable and breaks in quickly but suffers in the rain; leather holds up better to daily wear. Gum rubber soles grip well and feel thin, while solid rubber soles last longer. With tracksuits, the fabric makes the difference: French terry is warm and soft, tricot keeps its shape and recycled polyester dries fast. Also check whether the cut is slim or relaxed before you pick a size.

How to spend wisely

To start, a classic pair in white or black goes with almost everything and pays for itself quickly; iconic models cost between 80 and 120 euros and often drop 30% in sales. A basic tracksuit costs between 30 and 55 euros and works for easy workouts and lounging. It is worth paying more for materials that last, such as leather or heavy cotton. Replace sneakers when the sole loses its tread or the heel loses its shape, and wash tracksuits inside out in cold water so they keep their color.
