Best Punching Bags (2026): Hanging, Freestanding and How Heavy

The classic mistake is buying a bag that's too light: if you weigh 80 kg and the bag weighs 14, it swings so much you spend your workout waiting for it to come back. The second is not thinking about where you'll hang it. We chose six bags for home, from a basic 14 kg model to a 32 kg bag for punches and kicks. Prices from Decathlon (Spanish store) on September 29, 2026.

Hanging bag or freestanding bag

A hanging bag is more stable and handles hard punches better. In exchange, you need a ceiling, a beam or a wall mount that can take the weight and the swing.

A freestanding bag needs no installation: fill the base with water or sand and you're done. It's ideal if you rent, but it rocks and slides if you hit hard.

How heavy your bag should be

A simple rule: the bag should weigh about half your body weight.

As a guide: 14-20 kg if you weigh under 60 kg, 20-30 kg between 60 and 80 kg, and 30 kg or more if you're over 80 kg or hit very hard. If you'll be kicking, look for a bag that's 120 cm or taller.

Type of mounting

Ceiling: the most common. Use a dedicated heavy bag hook screwed into a beam or a concrete slab, never into a drywall drop ceiling. A swivel keeps the straps from twisting.

Wall: a wall mount holds the bag away from the wall and spreads the load. Have someone experienced install it if you don't know what your wall can handle.

Stand: if you can't drill, there are freestanding stands with legs. They take up a lot of room, but they don't touch the ceiling or walls.

Verdict

If you weigh under 60 kg and will only punch, the 14 kg bag for €45 is enough. For most people, the 20 kg Outshock 120 is the best buy for home. If you can't hang anything, the freestanding bag is the logical choice, as long as you accept that it will move. If you do kickboxing or Muay Thai, go with the 32 kg Outshock 500, and if you want a classic-brand bag for hitting hard, the 30 kg Everlast Nevatear.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a freestanding punching bag weigh when filled?

It depends on the fill: water weighs 1 kg per liter, so 28 liters of water is about 28 kg; with sand it weighs quite a bit more and moves less.

Will a punching bag bother my neighbors?

A hanging bag transmits impacts to the ceiling. Straps are quieter than chains, but if you live in an apartment, a freestanding bag on a mat is the quietest option.

Can I use bag gloves on a heavy bag?

Better to use 12-14 oz boxing gloves and hand wraps. Thin bag gloves or MMA gloves put more stress on your wrists and knuckles.

Does a punching bag come with a ceiling hook?

Usually not. Decathlon's bags include the straps, but the ceiling hook or wall mount is sold separately.
