Best Adjustable Dumbbells (2026): 7 Sets Compared

A pair of adjustable dumbbells replaces a full dumbbell rack and fits under your bed. But they're not all equal: some go up in 1 kg steps and others in 4 kg steps, some reach 32 kg and others stop at 11. We compared seven sets from Amazon and Decathlon, from a €50 spin-lock kit to premium dumbbells over €400. Prices from Spanish/European stores on October 5, 2026.

The three adjustment systems

Spin-lock plates: a short threaded handle, plates and collars you screw on. It's the cheapest and most durable option, but changing weight takes 30-60 seconds per dumbbell. Fine if you don't change weights often.

Selector dial (Bowflex, BRAINGAIN, JUPPLIES, LULLAX): you set the dumbbell in its cradle, turn a dial or the handle, and it picks up only the plates you chose. Weight changes take seconds. The trade-off: you can only adjust in the cradle, and the mechanisms and plastic parts shouldn't be dropped.

Selector pin (PowerBlock): the dumbbell is a rectangular block and you choose the weight with a magnetic pin. It's very compact and tough, though the block shape gets in the way on some moves like a close-grip press.

Weight increments: the detail you'll notice most

On squats or bench press, a 2 kg jump is no big deal. On lateral raises or curls, going from 8 to 12 kg in one step is impossible for most people.

The NEO32 goes up in 4 kg steps: good for big lifts, bad for shoulders. The 24 kg dial sets have 15 settings with 1-2.5 kg jumps. The plate kit lets you add 1 kg per side.

Size, cradle and noise

Dial dumbbells are about 39-47 cm long at any weight, because the handle doesn't change. The LULLAX sets get shorter at light weights, and the PowerBlock Sport 24 is only about 25 cm long.

Dial sets rattle a bit as plates move in the cradle, and they must never be dropped. If you train in an apartment, a thick mat underneath prevents bangs and complaints from the neighbors.

Verdict

For most people, the BRAINGAIN 24 kg set is the best buy: a full pair, 15 settings and almost 400 ratings for €229. On a tight budget, the €50 Corength 20 kg kit works and can be expanded. If you already lift heavy, the LULLAX NEO32 goes up to 32 kg. Watch out for the PowerBlock Sport 24: that's 24 pounds, not 24 kg.

Frequently asked questions

What weight adjustable dumbbells should I get?

To start, 2-24 kg (5-52.5 lb) per dumbbell covers almost everything. If you already train and do heavy rows, lunges or presses, look for 32 kg (70 lb).

Are adjustable dumbbells worth it?

Yes if you train at home: one pair replaces 15 pairs of fixed dumbbells and takes up the space of a big shoebox. Plate-loaded sets are cheaper but slow to change.

Can you drop adjustable dumbbells?

No. Dial dumbbells have mechanisms and plastic parts that can break. Set them down with control or put them back in the cradle.

Dial or plate-loaded dumbbells?

Dial if you change weights often or do supersets. Plate-loaded if you want to spend less and care more about durability than speed.
